Word Tiles: a Scrabble-style game to play online

Word Tiles is Game Room's Scrabble-style board game. You get seven letter tiles, build words across a 15 by 15 board, and chase the bonus squares for big scores. It has its own bonus layout and letter values, so even regular Scrabble players have to think a little differently.

How Word Tiles plays on Game Room

1. Join from the host's link with just your name.
2. Game Room seats everyone at tables of two to four. A lone player gets a computer opponent.
3. Your seven tiles are private, on your phone only.
4. On your turn, place tiles in one line to make a word, then play it. Game Room checks every word and adds up your score.
5. Instead of playing, you can swap tiles or pass.
6. You have 45 seconds per turn. If time runs out, your turn is passed.

The rules

• The board is 15 by 15, and each player holds seven tiles.
• The first word must cross the centre square and be at least two letters long.
• Tiles go in a single line with no gaps, and every new word must join tiles already on the board.
• Every word formed by your move must be in Game Room's word list. Two-letter words are allowed.
• Bonus squares double or triple a letter or a word, but only on the turn they are first covered.
• Use all seven tiles in one turn for a 50 point bonus.
• You can swap tiles while seven or more remain in the bag, or pass.
• The game ends when the bag is empty and someone plays their last tile, or after six scoreless turns in a row.
• Players are ranked by score. At a table of four, 1st earns 1,000, down to 250 for 4th.

Tips to win

• Check the letter values on the tiles. Game Room's values differ from the board game you may know.
• Short words placed alongside existing words can score twice, once in each direction.
• Keep a good mix of vowels and consonants. If your rack is hopeless, swap early.
• Look out for the word bonus squares near the corners and centre. They multiply everything in the word.
