Tables of 3 to 4
Play Whot online with friends
Whot is the Naija card game everybody grew up slamming down on the table, and on Game Room you can play it on your phone with friends and family wherever they are. Pick Two, Suspension, General Market and the Whot 20 that calls a shape are all there, just like at home. The only thing missing is somebody accusing you of hiding cards under your leg.
How Whot plays on Game Room
- The host adds Whot to the night on gameroomnaija.com. Players join from the code or link with just a name.
- When the game starts, Game Room seats everyone at tables of up to four and deals five cards each.
- On your turn, tap a card that matches the top card by shape or number. Cards you can play light up.
- If you cannot play, or do not want to, tap to go to market and pick one card.
- You have 25 seconds per turn. If time runs out, you go to market automatically.
- The first player to empty their hand finishes the table. If the host's timer ends first, tables are ranked by what is left in each hand.
- Want to practise? Play Whot against the computer anytime in the Lounge at gameroomnaija.com/lounge, no sign-up needed.
The rules
- Game Room uses a 54-card Whot deck in five shapes (circle, triangle, cross, square, star) plus five Whot 20 cards.
- Play a card of the same shape or the same number as the top card.
- 1 is Hold On: you play again.
- 2 is Pick Two and 5 is Pick Three. The next player must pick, or defend with the same number to pass it on bigger. Only a 2 defends a 2, and only a 5 defends a 5.
- 8 is Suspension: the next player misses their turn.
- 14 is General Market: everyone else picks one card from the market and you play again.
- Whot 20 can be played on anything. You call a shape and the next card must be that shape, or another Whot.
- First to empty their hand wins the table. If the market runs out, the player with the fewest card points wins.
- At time up, tables are ranked: the finisher first, then fewest card points in hand, then fewest cards.
- Points by place: 1st at a table of four earns 1,000, 2nd 750, 3rd 500 and 4th 250.
Tips to win
- Hold on to a 2 or a 5. It is your only shield when someone fires a pick at you.
- Save Whot 20 for when you are stuck, and call the shape you have the most of.
- Get rid of high numbers early. If the timer ends, card points in your hand count against you.
- When someone is down to one or two cards, hit them with Pick Two, Pick Three or Suspension.
- Use Hold On and General Market to chain plays and empty your hand faster.
