Finish the Proverb: a Nigerian proverbs game

Finish the Proverb shows the start of a saying and asks you to choose how it ends. The sayings come in Pidgin, English, and Yoruba proverbs written in English, the kind your grandmother dropped at the perfect moment. It is a lovely game for mixed ages because the elders finally get their chance to shine.

How Finish the Proverb plays on Game Room

  1. Open the host's link on your phone, enter your name and wait in the lobby.
  2. When the round begins, the first half of a proverb appears on screen.
  3. Choose the correct ending from four options within 25 seconds.
  4. After each proverb, Game Room shows the right ending and explains what the saying means in plain English.
  5. Points are added up at the end of the round and go onto the night's leaderboard.

The rules

  • Every proverb has four possible endings and only one is correct.
  • Proverbs come in three styles: Pidgin, English, and Yoruba sayings given in English.
  • You have 25 seconds per proverb.
  • The round is worth up to 1,000 points, divided across its proverbs.
  • Answer correctly and fast for the most points. A correct answer at the last second still earns half.
  • Wrong or missing answers score zero.
  • The meaning of each proverb is shown at the reveal, so nobody is left confused.

Tips to win

  • Think about what the proverb is trying to teach. The ending usually completes the lesson.
  • Proverbs love balance and contrast. Endings that mirror the first half are often right.
  • If you grew up hearing a saying a slightly different way, pick the closest match rather than waiting.
  • Sit next to an auntie for practice before game night. It works.
