Act Am: charades online over a video call

Act Am is charades for game night on a video call. One person in your group gets a secret word on their phone and acts it out on camera, while everyone else types guesses. It brings out the hidden Nollywood star in the quietest cousin.

How Act Am (charades) plays on Game Room

1. Join from the host's link and keep your camera on in the video call.
2. Game Room puts everyone into groups of about five.
3. Each turn, one person in each group gets a secret word on their phone.
4. They act it out on camera without speaking the word while their group watches.
5. Guessers type their answers on their phones. Each turn lasts about 72 seconds.
6. The word is revealed, then the next person in the group takes a turn.

The rules

• Act it out on camera. Do not say or write the word.
• Guessers type their guesses. Capitals, spaces, hyphens and accents are ignored, but the word itself must be right.
• Faster correct guesses earn guessers more.
• The actor earns points based on how many in the group guessed correctly.
• If most guessers vote that the actor cheated with letters or numbers, the actor gets nothing for that turn.
• Everyone takes turns acting during the round.
• Points are compared within each group: the top scorer earns 1,000 and the rest are scaled to match.

Tips to win

• Step back from the camera so your group can see your whole body.
• Agree on simple signals before the round, like holding up fingers for the number of words.
• Act the most obvious part of the word first, then add detail.
• Guessers, type fast and often. There is no penalty for wrong guesses.
