Who Be the Thief? A Naija mafia party game

Who Be the Thief? is a group game of secrets, suspicion and loud arguments, in the style of Mafia or Werewolf. A few players are secretly thieves. By night they rob someone, and by day everyone talks on the call and votes out who they think is guilty. Friendships will be tested.

How Who Be the Thief? plays on Game Room

  1. Join the host's night from the link with your name and stay on the video call.
  2. Game Room puts everyone into groups of seven to twelve. Computer players fill a short group.
  3. Your phone secretly tells you if you are honest or a thief. Thieves also see who the other thieves are.
  4. Night (30 seconds): the thieves quietly choose someone to rob. That person is out.
  5. Day (90 seconds): everyone talks on the call, then votes on their phone for who to send out.
  6. Nights and days repeat until one side wins or the host's timer ends.

The rules

  • There is one thief for every five players, and always at least one.
  • Thieves know each other. Honest players do not know anyone's role.
  • At night, the thieves pick someone who is not a thief to rob. The most-picked person is out. A tie means nobody is robbed.
  • By day, everyone still in votes. The person with the most votes is out, and their role is shown. A tie sends nobody out.
  • You cannot vote for yourself.
  • Players who are out can watch but cannot vote.
  • Honest players win when every thief is gone. Thieves win when they equal the honest players, or if they are still hiding when time is up.
  • Everyone on the winning side earns 1,000 points. Everyone on the losing side earns 300.

Tips to win

  • Honest players: watch who pushes hard to vote someone out, and who stays very quiet.
  • Thieves: act honest, join in the accusations, and do not always defend your partner.
  • Talk it through before voting. A split vote and a tie sends nobody out, which helps the thieves.
  • Remember the clock is on the thieves' side. Honest players need to find them before time runs out.
