Play Four in a Row online with friends

Four in a Row is the classic disc-dropping game also known as Connect Four. Take turns dropping discs into a seven-column grid and be the first to line up four. Games are quick, so it is perfect for head-to-head battles between siblings who have been arguing since 1998.

How Four in a Row plays on Game Room

1. Join the host's night from the code or link with just your name.
2. Game Room pairs players up. If there is an odd number, one player faces the computer.
3. On your turn, tap a column and your disc drops to the lowest free space.
4. Line up four of your discs in a row to win: across, down or diagonally.
5. You have 20 seconds per turn. If you run out, a disc is dropped in a middle column for you.

The rules

• The board has 7 columns and 6 rows.
• Discs drop to the lowest empty space in the column you choose.
• You cannot play in a full column.
• Four of your discs in a straight line wins: horizontal, vertical or diagonal.
• A full board with no line of four is a draw.
• Points: a win earns 1,000, a draw 750 and a loss 500, even against the computer.
• A game still going when time is up counts as a draw.

Tips to win

• Play the middle column early. It is part of more possible lines than any other.
• Always check whether your opponent can win on their next move before you attack.
• Look for moves that create two threats at once. Your opponent can only block one.
• Be careful not to drop a disc that gives your opponent the space above it.
